What is a word & character counter?

The job of a word counter is simple on the surface: read a piece of text and report how many words, characters, and sentences are in it. The tricky part is consistency — handling "multiple spaces" as a single word, deciding whether a lone punctuation mark forms a sentence — and this tool applies the same rules every time so the numbers stay reliable.

The second tab handles a different everyday annoyance — reformatting text stuck in the wrong case, be it a lowercase heading, an all-caps sentence pasted from elsewhere, or a title that needs its capitalization fixed before it goes anywhere near a finished document.

How it works

1. Paste or type your text

Drop in anything from a single sentence to a full paragraph. There is no minimum or maximum length.

2. Read the live counts

Word, character, character-without-spaces, and sentence counts update on every keystroke.

3. Switch to case conversion

Use the second tab to instantly convert the same kind of text to UPPERCASE, lowercase, Title Case, or Sentence case.

4. Copy the converted result

Grab the transformed text with one click and paste it directly where you need it.

When to use it

  • Checking that a social media post or headline fits inside a character limit.
  • Formatting a heading or title consistently before publishing it.
  • Fixing a block of pasted text that came through in the wrong case entirely.
  • Getting a quick sentence count to judge how dense or readable a paragraph is.
  • Trimming a bio or headline down to fit a strict character cap.

Built to be trusted

SolidWords exists because most of the calculators we tried online were cluttered with ads, tracking scripts, and confusing extra fields. We kept this one down to exactly what it needs to do, with every formula documented rather than hidden away.

Our small team, working out of Portland, OR, keeps this deliberately narrow in scope — one job done well beats a crowded dashboard nobody asked for.

Frequently asked questions

Does the counter count numbers as words?

Yes, it does — anything separated by whitespace counts as a word, regardless of whether it is a plain word, a number, or a hyphenated term.

How is a sentence detected?

Sentence boundaries are detected by looking for runs of periods, question marks, or exclamation points. An abbreviation ending in a period can occasionally get miscounted as a sentence break, which is a known limitation of any simple text-analysis approach.

Will Title Case correctly skip small words like "of" or "the"?

No — every word gets its first letter capitalized, small words included, which keeps the rule simple and predictable. If your style guide wants "of" or "the" lowercased, that is a quick manual tweak after conversion.

Is there a text length limit?

There is no hard cap, though a genuinely huge block of text — many thousands of words — may update a touch slower live, purely because of browser rendering speed.
