About SolidWords
One small tool, built to do a single job properly.
Why we built this
SolidWords began life in 2013 as a weekend project to fix a small annoyance — every word & character counter we could find online was slow, ad-heavy, or buried its actual formula behind a paywall. This one is none of those things.
Dana Slater still runs the small team behind this site from Portland, OR. Nothing gets added unless it traces back to a documented, correct formula and loads quickly enough to be genuinely useful, not just impressive.
What we stand for
Privacy by default
Calculations run in your browser. We do not need your data to do our job.
No dark patterns
No forced sign-up, no fake countdown timers, no auto-playing anything.
One job, done well
We would rather maintain a single focused tool carefully than spread across a dozen half-finished ones.
How we keep the formulas correct
Each formula on this site is implemented once, checked against known correct values, and never touched again unless something is genuinely wrong with it. Shipping fewer calculators that are always right matters more to us than shipping many that are only mostly right. When a visitor points out an edge case we had not considered — a leap year, a negative percentage, a currency with unusual rounding conventions — we treat it as a bug report and fix the formula, not just the symptom.
We also try to explain our work rather than hide it behind a black box. The how it works page walks through the exact formula behind every result on this site, in plain language, so you never have to simply take our word for it.
Get in touch
Send corrections, questions, or ideas through the contact page any time. We read each one ourselves, and more than one improvement here began as a visitor noticing something before we did.
