Reading Time Estimator

Estimate how long a piece of writing takes to read, based on word count and reading speed.

Reading time estimates are useful for writers, editors, and publishers who want to set expectations before someone commits to an article, an email, or a set of instructions. The calculation itself is simple: divide the total word count by an assumed reading speed, measured in words per minute.

200 words per minute is the default here, drawn from commonly cited figures for adult silent reading of general text. At that pace, the preloaded sample works out to about 0 minutes and 15 seconds. Since real reading speed varies by reader and by material, the words-per-minute field is left adjustable.

Think of this as a small, deliberate companion to the main word counter: one tool tells you how much text you are looking at, and this one turns that figure into an estimate of how long it takes to read.

A quick tip before you start

As with every calculator on SolidWords, there is no submit-and-wait step here — results update live as you type, entirely in your browser. When a result looks unexpected, the units in each field are the first thing worth checking, since that explains most odd-looking answers.

Since this tool has its own address separate from the main calculator, bookmarking it directly is worth doing if you come back to this calculation often — it saves a trip through the homepage every time.
